How we tested

To really make sure I gave an honest opinion I put this device to work. I performed both an ice bath test and boiling water test, along with multiple different cooks. I also checked the devices ability to stay connected via Bluetooth and Wifi.

Length of Meatstick V

Design (A little long, Nice Designed Base)

 Probes

The probe is 121.1 MM (4.76 inches) long and .5MM in diameter. This is a little shorter than the MeatStick 4. The tip is a little pointy which helped with easier insertion. This size is great for medium to larger cuts of meat. Maybe a little too large for a small steak or chicken breast. I do find the handle a little challenging to grab compared to the Typhur that had more of a T shaped handle.

Base

Magnetic charging base easily sticks to the side of the smoker or on the refrigerator. It acts as the Bluetooth and Wifi bridge to keep you connected. The base is a little more of a sleek design then the other MeatStick sets. There are lights that blink and change colors that may confuse you to know what they mean until you look it up. (See FAQ sections below).

Ease of Use (Step by Step Walk Through)

Start Up

Once I pulled this out of the box I plugged it in and charged it up. This is always a PLUS for me instead of the base needing batteries such as the MeatStick 4x that needs them and doesn't come with them which delays the initial up and running.

I already had the mobile app installed from using several other Meatick products. I did need to update the firmware upon opening the app.

Mobile app

If you are just getting started with the MeatStick Mobile App it is pretty straight forward and should walk you through all of the steps needed to get started including setting up the WIFI connection.

I needed to update my app and then follow the steps to add a new stick into my collection.

Meatstick V Set up on mobile app

Once it's up and running it's pretty easy to understand as far as selecting a way of cooking, a meat, and so forth. It will guide you to make the selections you want, allows you to set different temperatures along with the recommended temperatures, and also instructs how to insert the probe into the particular meat.

Once the cook is set up, you can view each sensors temperature and there is a little button to select to drop down more detailed info for each sensor.

⭐ Ease of Use Rating: 10/10

Performance (Make sure app is up to date)

Speed of readings

The MeatStick V quickly pulled up temperatures. From the temperature of the room when you pull it out of the base, to the temperature of the meat, along with changes in the ambient temperature upon opening the smoker, etc.

Range

This thermometer set was designed for longer distance monitoring. With the addition of built in WIFI capabilities, technically you can view and monitor your cook wherever you have internet. The smart base also was made for longer distances boasting 900+ ft of Bluetooth connectivity.

I took my phone for a walk to see when it would switch over to WIFI mode and I did make it about 700 feet before the app lost the Bluetooth signal. This is still pretty significant since many competitors such as some of the MEATER's thermometers Bluetooth range is under 200 ft.

I did lose signal several times in all of my cooks inside of the house. And that wasn't very far from the smoker outside. So through the garage wall and one wall into the house. The app would alert me to move the device closer to the probe.

connection issues

Now this was a little unstable compared to the Typhur Sync Gold Dual that used sub 1G technology that offered a strong connection even through walls, barriers, or obstacles. Even in my testing of the Meatstick Chef X, that set did not lose connection not even once inside of the house via Bluetooth.

We reached out to the MeatStick company and they told us that there was firmware and software updates sent out and to make sure our version was the most up to date. I did appreciate this knowing that the company is aware and trying to fix it up on their end.

I was struggling to have the base connect to WIFI after I performed the updates as well. I ended up doing a factory reset on the base and re-installing the app. Since performing those, it is working flawlessly as it is supposed to (switching from Bluetooth to Wifi when out of range).

Accuracy (Spot on every time)

Ice Bath Test

Upon getting started with this thermometer set I decided to perform an ice bath test to see how quickly we could get down to 32 degrees F. It only took about 35 seconds to come on down to temperature.

Boiling Water Test

I also wanted to perform a boiling water test. Note: MeatStick advises against this in case of damage to your stick. I carefully performed this and had no problem getting to the 212 Degrees F with a warning of overheating the stick and to remove so that it would't get damaged.

The Cooks

For true testing purposes, I used this thermometer in 3 separate cooks. I smoked a turkey, some ribs, and also seared some pork chops in the cast iron pan. Each of the meats came out perfectly and were within a few degrees from my insta-read thermometers.

Battery & Charging (Rechargeable & Long lasting)

I do appreciate the newest addition of a rechargeable base that comes with a cord. So to get started, go find a charging block, plug it in. This set claims a 50+ hour battery life and also a quick charge, too.

I made it through the ice bath test, boiling water test, and the turkey cook (about 6 hours) with no problems and the app still displayed a full battery.

During a few of the updates and making sure my firmware was up to date, the app would tell me to make sure the stick was fully charged. So I did have it plugged in quite a bit.

I also smoked a pork shoulder (about a 19 hour cook) and the probe lasted the whole time but I did have to plug the base in after 15 hours.

⭐Battery & Charging Rating: 8/10

Maintenance (Super easy)

This wireless thermometer is waterproof so that you are able to toss it in the dishwasher if you want. Or just give it a good cleaning with soap and water after your cooks.

Value

The MeatStick V is currently selling for $129.99 which seems to be mid range for the WIFI technology. The few other thermometers that offer this technology such as the Pro Smart WiFi Wireless Meat Thermometer comes in around $80 where the Typhur Gold Sync Dual is processed at $229.99 (but you get two probes).

  • Many appreciate the ability to sear at high heat temperatures
  • Rechargeable base is a plus
  • Improved Bluetooth range from the other MeatStick thermometers
