This recipe originally appeared in my Dr Pepper Chicken Wing Recipe. It's such an easy sauce to make, and there are so many different foods this sauce pairs well with. Some people might call this an Alabama White Sauce. Originally made popular in the South, if you haven't tried a White BBQ Sauce, you are missing out.

The tangy flavor pairs perfectly with chicken and pork. It has a little more bite than your typical coleslaw dressing but pairs GREAT with coleslaw too. It only takes a few minutes to make this sauce and uses common ingredients.

Homemade BBQ Sauce

A lot of people shy away from homemade barbecue sauces because they think they're difficult to make. Some of them can be a challenge, but this is one of the easiest to make homemade bbq sauces you will find. Bonus points because it's super tasty too.

Alabama White Sauce

When I first talked about making this sauce with my wife, she was skeptical. Alabama White Sauce is not like your typical ketchup or molasses-based homemade barbecue sauce. The base for this sauce is mayonnaise.

Ingredients Needed

This homemade white barbecue sauce was really easy to make and only requires a few ingredients.

Ingredients Needed for Alabama white sauce
  • Mayonnaise- this makes up the base of the sauce.
  • Black pepper- just a little bit is great here.
  • Garlic powder- I love garlic in pretty much everything.
  • Dijon mustard- This slightly spiced mustard compliments all of the other ingredients nicely.
  • Apple cider vinegar- a little acidity and tang is added with the vinegar.
  • Horseradish- this is very strong flavored and adds some spice. You can add a bit more if you like it but I found 1 tbsp. to be just enough.
  • Sugar- the sugar helps cut the acidity a bit and helps balance the spice from the cayenne and horseradish.
  • Salt- the overall taste is enhanced with some salt!
  • Cayenne (optional)- I liked the cayenne pepper here. It adds some nice depth and heat without being too over powering. But you can skip it if you want.

How to make this Alabama White Sauce

Step 1: Combine ingredients. Combine all of the ingredients into a medium sized mixing bow or even right into a shaker bottle.

Step 2: Whisk. Use a whisky to mix it all until well combined. Then refrigerate until ready to use. I find that the flavors combine best if chilled overnight.

Note: You can just add ingredients to your shaker bottle if you have one, shake vigorously and then chill overnight.

That's it! Then enjoy with some chicken wings, slathered on some smoked ribs, or just to dip fries or onions rings! Enjoy.
